A Smarter Approach to Training After 40

Most people I work with don’t struggle because they’re lazy or unmotivated.

They struggle because they’ve never been shown a way to train that actually fits their life—especially as they get older.

“Bloody hell, I’m getting old”.

In over two decades of personal training this is the one excuse I could never let slide.

It’s obviously true, we are all getting older.

But it is always used as a get out of jail free card.

Back pain?

Niggly knees?

Feeling like a bag of spanners in the morning?

That’s not getting old…that’s just how your joints are interacting with each other.

The right exercises can improve that.

Not feeling strong?

Not enjoying what you see in the mirror?

Getting puffed going upstairs?

These things can improve…just blaming it on age and letting your quality of life deteriorate is something I find hugely frustrating.

When you don’t have the answers it’s easy to feel stuck.

From my early 30s my body started to feel like it was letting me down.

In my 20s I felt invincible.

I’d run marathons, box, lift weights…even sometimes after rolling out of a club at silly o’clock.

Then in my 30s, things changed.

Niggles that used to disappear suddenly stuck around.

Shoulders hurt. Knees complained. Every now and then my back would “go” for no obvious reason.

I spent more time trying to stay pain-free than actually enjoying training.

With less free time (hello parenthood) and more niggles, the fun in being fit started to fade.

Social media made it seem like everyone was smashing it and I was left behind.

Nothing seemed to help long term.

Until in my 40s (and having pulled out of marathon training after another leg niggle) I started

a deep dive into biomechanics…a study of how the body moves…it fundamentally changed how I thought about mobility and building fitness.

That knowledge has been transformational in my own life.

And for my lovely clients.

It was the missing link between the frustrated person on the couch and the fun athletic programs I’d spent years studying.

It’s why I love working with the over 40s.

Seeing people regain strength, fitness and athleticism that they thought was in the past.

Sure, at our age we won’t be winning Olympic medals.

But we can vastly improve on where we are and carry on living life being as adventurous and vigorous as ever.
